PHOENIX (Sept. 4, 2019) – With Hurricane Dorian approaching the Southeast area of the country, Republic Services offers these tips to keep recycling and waste containers secure and to keep customers informed:
- Move recycling and trash containers out of streets and right-of-way areas so they don’t become a hazard during high winds, heavy rain or severe flooding.
- Close container lids to prevent rain from filling the container or wind from scattering debris.
- If possible, secure containers inside the garage, under a carport or behind a residence or business until after the storm. If containers cannot be moved to a safe area, secure them to a fence or other heavy object.
- Commercial customers with containers in corrals should also secure corral doors and locks to prevent any potential hazards.
The storm’s high winds, heavy rains and flooding could cause damage in some service areas. In most cities, storm debris is separately contracted under FEMA disaster assistance, based on assessments from local emergency managers. Debris pickup will be separate from the regular waste and recycling collection. For additional details and a visual guide to preparing storm debris for pickup, refer to these Debris Removal Guidelines.
After the storm has passed and as recovery efforts get underway, Republic Services will stand ready to collect solid waste and recycling as soon as roads are clear. Customers are reminded to check RepublicServices.com for alerts regarding any service interruptions. Normal service will resume when local emergency management officials determine conditions are safe and areas are accessible.
