FRESNO, Texas (Oct. 25, 2019) – Republic Services unveiled today a new landfill gas-to-energy project at Blue Ridge Landfill. Replacing an older renewable energy project at the site, the new facility is designed to collect landfill gas generated at Blue Ridge Landfill and yield a clean, renewable fuel. The facility has the capacity to reduce annual greenhouse gas emissions equivalent of more than 51,000 cars on local roads, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

“As a leader in our industry, we strive to do the right thing and be a good neighbor,” said area president Rich Kang. “With this innovative renewable energy facility right here in our community, we are using the latest technology to capture the byproduct of our solid waste and convert it into renewable energy that protects our local environment and provides a clean fuel source.”

Landfill gas-to-energy projects like these involve capturing methane as organic waste breaks down. The methane can be processed to meet natural gas pipeline quality specifications, converting organic waste into a clean fuel and energy source for future generations.

The Blue Ridge facility is one of Republic’s 75 renewable energy projects across the nation, and one of 10 located in Texas. In total, Republic’s landfill gas to energy projects generate enough renewable energy to fully power more than 250,000 homes annually.

Morrow Renewables, which built and operates the landfill gas-to-energy facility at Blue Ridge Landfill, is a recognized leader among renewable natural gas developers. A Midland-based company, Morrow partners with Republic on three renewable energy projects in Texas.
