PHOENIX (Aug. 12, 2021) – As numerous communities face hardships due to the ongoing pandemic, Republic Services continues to invest in neighborhood revitalization efforts across the country. Since 2020, the Republic Services Charitable Foundation has awarded National Neighborhood Promise® (NNP) grants to 30 nonprofit affiliates to support 35 neighborhood revitalization projects. This is in addition to the Company’s Committed to Serve grants and the ongoing support our local divisions provide to their communities.
"Our National Neighborhood Promise program helps neighborhoods thrive by revitalizing and enhancing public places and spaces," said Catharine Ellingsen, Republic Services executive vice president and president of the Republic Services Charitable Foundation. "We're proud to have supported the program over the past year, and we look forward to continuing to invest in the neighborhoods we serve."
As a part of Republic's ambitious sustainability goals, the Company is prioritizing community service and impact. Since 2018, the Foundation has positively impacted 4.9 million people through charitable giving and is committed to increasing that impact to 20 million people by 2030.
Through the NNP program, the Foundation partners with select nonprofit organizations to directly support neighborhood revitalization work. The Foundation supports these efforts through granted funds, donated products and services, and volunteer opportunities for employees.
In recent months, local teams have helped nonprofits launch or complete numerous NNP projects, including:
- Dwelling Place of Grand Rapids leveraged its grant to convert local rental units into homeownership opportunities in Grand Rapids, Mich. The organization also elevated the surrounding outdoor spaces with the creation of a playground area and community garden. Republic Services volunteers worked to install garden beds and more to support the revitalization effort. This project supported Dwelling Place’s mission of creating affordable housing opportunities and revitalizing neighborhoods.
- In partnership with Habitat for Humanity Quad Cities, Republic Services volunteers helped complete exterior improvements to 13 properties in the Floreciente neighborhood in Moline, Ill., as a part of the organization’s Rock the Block improvement project. For two days, volunteers painted fences, porches and foundations, and helped with yard cleanups in the neighborhood. The project supported the revitalization of properties that surround the community’s streetscape plan.
- Republic partnered with Rebuilding Together Southern Nevada (RTSNV) to support residents and children in Las Vegas, Nev. With support from more than 100 Republic volunteers, RTSNV helped the Andre Agassi Boys and Girls Club renovate critical spaces in the building, including remodeling the bathrooms and kitchen, painting the gym and other projects. Additionally, volunteers assisted with a local neighborhood cleanup. The renovation work at the Boys and Girls Club supplemented previous home renovation projects in the Historic Westside of Las Vegas and the distribution of safe at-home kits to community members.
- Rebuilding Together Twin Cities (RTTC) in St. Paul, Minn., leveraged its NNP grant to invest in the historic Rondo neighborhood, a predominantly Black community divided by an interstate expansion. Working with other community organizations, RTCC revitalized spaces at Rondo Commemorative Plaza and built a community garden to create a space that will help reconnect the neighborhood. More than 60 Republic volunteers built planters, installed pavers and completed other projects to make the garden a functional neighborhood space.
