AUSTIN, Texas --Oct. 10, 2012 – A long-time leader in protecting the environment, Republic Services (NYSE:RSG) hosted a ribbon cutting ceremony today to unveil the addition of four new natural gas vehicles (NGVs) to its Austin fleet. The new NGVs are deployed on the routes serving the greater Austin area.
Republic’s addition of the four NGVs will improve air quality and reduce truck noise in the local communities it serves. Replacing older vehicles with NGVs reduces carbon monoxide by 70-90 percent and carbon dioxide by 20-30 percent.
“Adding environmentally-friendly natural gas vehicles to our Austin fleet supports our commitment to protecting and enhancing the quality of the environment,” said Lee Kuhn, general manager, Republic Services of Austin. “All of our trucks provide a critical health service and the addition of the NGVs deepen this service by reducing noise and air pollution and improving the quality of life for all of our customers.”
Austin has an existing natural gas fueling infrastructure, and Republic will consider adding fueling stations to expand the reach of its natural gas powered fleet. Republic will use the existing fueling station at the airport, which is equipped for all types of natural gas vehicles, including taxis, shuttles, buses, and trucks.
Republic operates and maintains one of the largest fleets in the country and has gradually begun to incorporate the more efficient, planet-friendly NGVs into its routes across the United States. Earlier this year, Republic dedicated 68 percent of its new truck purchases to NGVs across the country.
Natural gas is the cleanest-burning transportation fuel commercially available and provides energy independence by offering an alternative to fossil fuels. Over the last several years, natural gas engines have achieved improved performance while exceeding EPA emissions requirements.
Later this year, Republic will implement a new commercial front-load NGV that will service downtown Austin.
