Republic Services ‘Flips The Switch’ To Open Recycling Center
State-of-the-Art Facility First-of-its-Kind in North Florida

JACKSONVILLE, Fla.—May 22, 2012 –Republic Services (NYSE:RSG) today announced the grand opening of its newly constructed state-of-the-art regional recycling center located in northwest Jacksonville on Imeson Road. The facility will serve the residents and businesses throughout a multi-county area, including Duval, St. Johns, and west to Alachua County and beyond, as well as areas of south Georgia including Savannah.

This recycling center represents a major investment by Republic Services in cutting-edge technology with advanced sorting capabilities including the use of magnets, screens and optical sorters which identify and separate different sorts of recyclables-making the process of adding these materials back into new products faster and easier.

"This represents Republic Services' commitment to Jacksonville and north Florida and our commitment to planet-friendly solutions," said Andrew King, general manager of Republic Services. "Making recycling easy for residents and businesses means higher participation across the region and, overall cost savings for the taxpayers and business owners."

Thirty jobs were created by opening the facility, adding $775,000 to the payroll annually.

The 70,000-square-foot facility will be able to process more than 65,000 tons of recyclables per year and the facility was designed to allow for expansion as recycling grows beyond the region and the increased processing can be added as quickly as demand requires.

The Eco Center at the facility will be available to teach the importance of reducing waste and to explain what happens to recyclables once they leave homes and businesses. Tours and training will be available at the Eco Center to students, professionals and community groups and a full range of educational opportunities will be available.

Florida Lieutenant Governor Jennifer Carroll, Florida Department of Environmental Protection Secretary Herschel Vineyard and Jacksonville Mayor Alvin Brown, and Councilperson Denise Lee joined Republic Services executives Robert Boucher, Republic Services senior vice president of Regional Operations South; Mark Clatt, Republic Services Florida area president and Andrew King, Republic Services general manager of North Florida to Flip the Switch to operate the 70,000-square-foot facility.
